‘Vicious Fun’: When Comedy and Horror Don’t See Eye To Eye

Overview

Released digitally on April 5th, 2022, this 2020 horror-comedy is a new take on parody film. There is no doubt that this movie can’t be taken seriously, though the real question is – is it supposed to? There are certain aspects of this film that warrant a certain level of respect, such as the luminescent and eye-catching cinematography. However, when it comes to the writing, character building, and acting; you might find yourself asking – is this supposed to be funny?

‘Vicious Fun’ – Plot Summary

Joel (portrayed by Evan Marsh) is a nerdy 20 something-year-old writer for a horror magazine – Vicious Fanatics. His main character development revolves around his crush on his roommate Sarah (portrayed by Alexa Steele), who quite frankly could not be less interested in him. One night, Sarah goes out with a new guy, and being the creep that he is – Joel hops into a cab and follows this man after he drops Sarah off. This “chase” leads him to a restaurant and bar where he proceeds to get drunk and pass out in a broom closet. Upon waking up, Joel discovers that he has landed himself in on some sort of secret meeting. As the people in the circle start talking, he realizes that he just crashed a support group for serial killers! And to make matters worse, Sarah’s new boy toy is one of them!

Finding an unlikely ally and barely escaping with his life, Joel and his new friend set off on a journey to right the wrongs of the world…and fail. This leads us to a conversation between Joel and his friend, during which he is told – “you might want to reexamine you”. This, of course, talks about his obsession with Sarah that landed him in this situation in the first place. Joel agrees, saying that he does in fact need to change if his life is to improve. This is the film’s interesting attempt at assigning morals to something that is supposed to function as bloody laughs. And admittedly, this scene sticks out like a sore thumb. So what is the deal with all of this?

This or That

One thing you’ll notice as you watch is – this movie doesn’t know what it wants to be. From one angle it’s a pretty decent slasher, from another it’s a questionable romance, if considering the plot lines that don’t lead anywhere then it’s a revenge mystery, and if you know where to look then it might also earn a few laughs. This is the biggest issue with the movie. It’s directionless – as though it was written without any sort of plan or outline. Or perhaps there was too much that the writers wanted to fit into the plot. Something like this can actually be a valuable lesson to aspiring filmmakers. So the actual truth that this film teaches is – pick a struggle.

Worth a Watch?

To answer the question of whether or not this film is worth an hour and forty-three minutes of your time simply – no, it isn’t. The comedic value is grossly misaligned with what the movie wants you to think of it, the acting is flashy in all the inappropriate places, the writing doesn’t really lead anywhere, and the overall atmosphere leaves you questioning what you just watched. So right around this time, you’re probably asking – so what’s the complicated answer? Well, there are things about this movie that are actually very well done. For example, the special effects makeup and other visual effects are better than in a lot of the higher budget productions that have been released recently.

There is a lot of comedic value in the parody factor of this movie and it could have actually been fantastic if they simply leaned more heavily into that aspect. The use of LED lighting is not at all tacky or in-your-face, it’s perfectly atmospheric – as it should be. This movie is aesthetically pleasing and cohesive, it does a good job at selective but intense gore, and you could actually get attached to some of the characters because of how distinct their character profiles are. This would be a fun movie to watch after a couple of glasses of wine, when you can’t judge the actual composition and storytelling.

Final Thoughts

‘Vicious Fun’ is not a movie you recommend to a friend when they ask you for a horror-comedy. Instead, it’s a movie you sit and laugh at. Whether because it can actually be quite funny, or because it’s so hectic that you’ve lost all hope at keeping track of the story and have elected to just take it at face value. This is the kind of movie you can’t think too much about. You watch it once, maybe you laugh, maybe you appreciate the aesthetics or the special effects makeup – and then you forget about it.

But every once in a while you find yourself thinking about a really well-lit scene or a joke that made you cackle and you wonder – where are those scenes from? Sure you forget the characters’ names, what they look like, what they sound like. That happens with most media. But you do think back on what you watched once in a while – remembering nothing about it – and you think of it being much better than it really was. Despite the fact that there isn’t a whole lot in this movie that’s done well, but the things that are, truly stick with you. So watch it if you want, or don’t!

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV. media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”

The Experiment by M.R. James

Mr. Hall was a priest from a small village. One day he was working in the office when his servant entered. The woman was alarmed. She said that the squire died. Mr. Hall was surprised, because he had seen this man the day before. But soon the church bell rang, notifying the village of someone’s death. It was true. People said that the squire suddenly got some terrible unusual disease. He passed away very quickly and they decided to bury him as soon as possible. The priest took his clothes and left the office to learn all the details. As it turned out, the squire said he did not want to be buried in the family crypt. He wished to be buried in an ordinary grave in a cemetery. The priest thought that the man was too ill to realize what he was talking about. But the last desire must be fulfilled.

‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ is a horror story, says filmmaker Joel Coen – AppleInsider

Writer/director Joel Coen hopes that streaming his critically acclaimed “The Tragedy of Macbeth” movie on Apple TV+ will bring it to audiences who might not have given it a shot.
Apple bought the film after it was completed, but in a new interview with the New York Times, writer/director Joel Coen says he wasn’t sure it would ever be finished. Famous for his theatrical films made with his brother Ethan Coen, he found production on “The Tragedy of Macbeth” halted by the coronavirus.
“I was actually fairly certain that we weren’t going to be able to finish the movie,” he says. “I thought, this is going to be this strange thing where three quarters of the movie was shot and it never got finished.”
The pandemic also saw streaming services getting films that would otherwise have first premiered in movie theaters. “The Tragedy of Macbeth” did get a premiere and short theatrical run, but it’s become a critically acclaimed hit for Apple TV+.
Coen says that Apple TV+ and all the streaming services are “fantastic because they bring the movie to all kinds of people who ordinarily might not have given it a shot.”
“I watch as much as I can [in theaters] and would like to see more things, and see them be in the theater longer,” he continued. “But I’m also as guilty as the next person of going, oh, I’ll turn the streaming service on and see it there.”
He also says that the streaming services are conscious of making the most of event films, and all productions.
“[They are] aware that this can’t just be a business where you’re dumping 40 new titles every other day on your service,” says Coen, “[not if] you want any of them to make a ripple in terms of people’s awareness.”
Coen was first asked by his wife and producing partner, actor Frances McDormand, to direct Shakespeare’s story as a stage play. In not wanting to do it as a theater piece, however, Coen did see his movie as being theatrical in every sense.
His screenplay, originally titled just “Macbeth”, sets out from the first moments that it is a stylized tale, but perhaps even more so than in his movies with Ethan Coen. The dialog is Shakespeare’s, for the most part, but the script specifies that it starts with an opening theater curtain.
The film’s starkly black and white look is also there from the first page, with a description of a location as “nothing but milky white from floor to ceiling.”
So it’s as much a deliberately non-realistic world that the film is set in, and Coen is not unnecessarily reverent of William Shakespeare’s original.
“I wanted to go as far as I could away from realism and more towards a theatrical presentation,” continues Coen. “I was trying to strip things away and reduce things to a theatrical essence, but still have it be cinema.”
“I came to [Shakespeare] as an amateur,” he says. “I’m still an amateur. [But it is] a murder story. In a way, it’s even a horror story.”
“The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington, is now streaming on Apple TV+.

“I wanted to go as far as I could away from realism and more towards a theatrical presentation,”
In that respect iI guess t would be more like the Orson Wells version. I haven’t seen it yet. I don’t want to jam it in between shopping and getting the taxes together. I want to make an evening of it.  But I am so looking forward to this film.

Looks amazing, tried to watch it, but only made it 15 min in because I can’t understand what tf they’re saying. They should have an option for closed captions to translate Shakespeare into modern language.

I was really disappointed because I love the Coen brothers. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was one of the most amazing films I’ve ever seen, a must watch.

It is a great film. But yes, you do have to some level of understanding Shakespearean language. If this is your first time really diving in outside of a high school english class, it might be a bit daunting. Subtitles still help though!

The subtitles are what got me from 10 min to 15 lol

It is a long time since I studied Macbeth at school. I had forgotten the incredible use of language that I enjoyed, and this production brings that to life in a truly exceptional way. Their concept and production quality is absolutely amazing.

it is a telling illustration of the paucity of modern education that so many struggle with how English was expressed back in the day. It is worth the time and effort to sit down and work it out, it doesn’t take as long as you think and suddenly you are into the mitre.
And yes subtitles help.

How American Horror Story And American Horror Stories Differences Cater To Both Types Of Horror Fans

Published

on

وقت القراءة المقدر: 6 دقيقة (دقائق)

American Horror Story and its spin off, American Horror Stories, have noticeable differences that allow the shows to entertain a broader audience.
The success of American Horror Story also came with lots of feedback from fans that were longing for different elements of horror in the show. To respond to some of these remarks, Ryan Murphy created American Horror Stories to explore the beloved tropes of the horror genre that the original show lacked.
While American Horror Story is known for its impressive ability to reflect society through its horrific tales and its complex, dynamic characters, its dense concepts bored some horror fans. While the show is nothing short of impressively conceived and woven together, it is not as fast-paced and tense as many scary movies, which is what a good number of fans look for in horror–something that makes them jump.
In contrast, American Horror Story changes storylines every episode or every other episode, rather than every season, which gives it a much quicker pace. This hastened the pace and resulted in characters that are more outwardly monsters, rather than flawed people with room to grow, giving the spin-off series a more traditional horror feeling. By focusing less on the message in each storyline and more on what the fans would enjoy or be creeped out by, American Horror Stories is the dessert for those fans with a sweet tooth for more traditional horror.
Because fans of the horror genre can essentially be sectioned into two groups, it makes sense to have two versions of a horror series concept to appeal to both groups. The first type of horror fans are the basic structure fans who prefer a straight forward scary story, with slasher films, hauntings (by static ghost characters), and zombie action flicks being a few examples.
The other type of horror fans are those that prefer a structure with a message. In other words, they like for there to be a deeper meaning to the film than what is on the surface and for the characters in the story to be complex. Fans in this group also sometimes prefer more obscure plots, with an ambiguous or indirect sequence of events that can sometimes leave the story open-ended.
Though some viewers were hesitant of what the spin-off series would bring to the table, the differences between the shows seem to speak for themselves. When considering the two groups of horror fans and how significantly different their tastes are, it seems very reasonable to have both shows. They essentially explore very similar concepts, in different measurements of time and through different lenses to check off the many tropes of horror. It would almost be contradictory to explore the two styles of horror in the same show which seems to justify the decision to create the spin-off series even more.
Beyond the structure of the shows being different, the effects they have on audiences differ, as well. American Horror Stories, being the series that leans more into horror that is centered around effects and visuals, is more a show for the moment, meaning the creepy feelings it evokes in the viewer fades after a while.
On the other hand, American Horror Story explores the psychology, spirituality, and emotions surrounding each horrifying concept which gives the story more depth, and thus more to unpack, resulting in it having a lingering impression on audiences. The concepts in this show, being more developed, take a bit more time to process and have a stronger ability to leave viewers reflecting on themselves.
While there are several differences that set the shows apart from each other and justify the simultaneous existence of both, they share several qualities that distinctly brand them as contributing to the same world. That is to say, they share several concepts, locations, and iconic characters that link the two overlapping worlds of each show.
However, while the worlds of American Horror Story and American Horror Stories do sometimes intermingle, they are still written to stand out from each other. The biggest difference between them is that the characters in the world of American Horror Stories are aware of the world of AHS. This is important because it indicates that the characters in American Horror Story are already familiar with how these situations turn out because they’ve seen it in the show, but they learn nothing from that and still make the same mistakes. It’s possible that these characters were meant to nod to AHS fans that seek to live these haunting situations in real life for a thrill, rather than learning from the message of the show.
All this said, any fan of the horror genre is sure to find something they like between Falchuk and Murphy’s two shows. The genius in creating both shows is that no trope of the genre is left out and neither is any horror fan, because between the two shows, so many concepts are artfully balanced, allowing the world to appeal to a broader fan base. Whether you’re fascinated by how terrifying circumstances bring about different responses in people, or you’re looking for a quick thrill, American Horror Story and American Horror Stories have a tale that will speak to everyone.
